Last Day in Japan

WOW! That went pretty fast, your probably thinking! Well, as it turns out plans have changed again. Saturday morning, Maki, Jimmy, and I changed our plane reservations so we could leave on Monday morning, arriving back in the states Monday evening. Poor Jimmy just arrived in Japan and he already had to think about heading home...so soon. We have been joking with him that he is so cool because he just flew to Japan for a long weekend, and now he's moving on to bigger and better travels ;-)

Anyway, besides that fact that we had to cut our trip short, we tried to make the best of the situation. Saturday afternoon (after Jimmy and Maki sat on the phone with Japan Airlines MOH (Music on Hold) for an hour...and our impromptu trip to the airport...again) we caught the JR (Japan Railroad) to Nagasaki. Maki's sister and her family live there...so they met us at the train station, with her husband and the two kids. Afterwards, they left us while we went to the Nagasaki Museum from the Atomic Bomb. OMG...It was so moving. It was so sad seeing all of the pictures and the remains of the buildings, coins, clothes, etc. that were burned/melt/disfigured from the bombing. We went to the Memorial where ground zero of the A-bomb was, and walked to the Peace Statue. There is no other way to describe the museum other than sad and moving. I think that everyone should see this place or the museum in Hiroshima so they can see and understand the reprocussions of nuclear war. It's absolutely devistating.

Anyway, after that amazing learning experience (as depressing as it was), we went to dinner with Maki's sister and her family. They took us to this excellent restuarant, the only way to describe it is: "Japanses Tappas". They had all these little appetizer like dishes that we ordered and shared. Ohhhh boy, that was some DELICIOUS food (minus the potatoe thing that felt really weird texture-wise in my mouth...kind of like a rubber tire;-) (there's pics of it...coming soon). Jimmy and Masahero (Uki's husband) shared a few bottles of Sake :-) It was again a really nice time. We enjoyed meeting more of Maki's family, and her niece (2 and a half years old...and a WHIZZZZZZZ at using chopsticks!!) and nephiew are the cutest things ever!!!! OMG!!! Anyway, none of them really spoke English, but we made due again with body language, and broken English and Japanese...ohh yes, and of course Maki translating as much as she possibly could. (What a trooper! She was the only link to the conversation that night, and what a GREATTTTTTTT job she did translating and helping all of us communicate!!)

We were all so tired that on the train ride home, as soon as we took our seats, the three of us passed out...and when I saw passed out I mean PASSED OUT hardcore! I have a bad feeling their might have been snoring/drooling involved. LOL Just kidding! hehehe :-) Anyway, we all had a solid two hour nap, which ruined us for sleep later that night. Maki and I stayed up talking until 2:30AM!! This morning, I was cursing myself for not sleeping earlier when the alarm went off at 7AM. My eyes were so tired and my body so exhausted, all I wanted to do was cry during breakfast ;-) But of course I didn't...I was strong...and then I finally talked to Seymen on the phone so I felt 200% better.

Well after breakfast and packing up...we accompanied Maki to the train station. She was headed to her parents house to spend her last day and night with her family, while Jimmy and I decided to forge out on our own and do some exploring. We went to this little village outside of Fukuoka called: "Dazaifu" where there is a few shrines, temples and castle ruins. It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL there! It was everything that I imagined Japan to be. We made our way to a temple where we ran into these nice older ladies who with broken Japanese, English, and pointing on the map told us we were NOT at the Dazaifu Shrine...and then they kindly took our picture in the temple.

We finally made our way to the shrine and I made an offering for Clare. We then walked all around the shrine grounds and came across this play being put on. It was traditional Japanese instruments and dancing. These men were all dressed in costumes and masks, with a CRAZYYYY drummer on the side. It was really a great show. Even though Jimmy and I knew no Japanese, it had us laughing so hard. One of the dancers went into the crowd and kept stealing the children to bring them on stage and give them candy...but all of the kids were scared of his mask, so they freaked out and were crying so hard. It was really cute, but sad for the little kids.

After the entertaining show, we headed down the way to the shopping street...were I did my only souviner shopping. Unfortunately, I made one big purchase and I couldn't really afford to buy anything else because they only took Yen and I needed to save the rest for the Taxi home from the train station...and the taxi to the airport tomorrow...so I am a little low on the gifts for this trip...but I feel lucky that I was able to even get anything due to the shortness of the trip. While there we also tasted the Umegae Rice Cake. OMGGGGG...if you've tried Mochie Ice and loved it, WAIT until you try THIS! OMGGG!!! It is soooooooo delicious. It's fried rice cake with soybean paste inside (but sweet...). It was soooo good, words can't even describe it. It was like a sweet 16 party in my mouth, for real. These are a speciality of Dazaifu and we are SOOOO thankful for Maki's recommendation to try it because it was so delicious. I bought a package of 5 to bring home and share with my family for dessert Monday night.

So by then it was almost 5PM and we thought it was time we headed back to Fukuoka. Once we arrived at the Tenjin Station, we walked the 10 minute walk to Canal City. It is this enormous mall that has a canal running through it. They had band playing in the center with fountains spraying in time with the music as the band played. (It was really reaaaallly cool). Jimmy and I ended up walking around there and Tenjin station area until about 7PM when we decided we were starving and needed dinner...So we headed back to the hotel and ate at this buffet restuarant in Hawkstown. Again, the food was DELICIOUS and I had my first ever Japanese beer. (Very tastey I might add!)

So, I decided to turn in early tonight because I had to pack my stuff, and do a little work (I know...bad beth), and write in my blog ;-) and go to bed early because I was so tired today...so now I'm going to lay in bed and read my Danielle Steele novel. GOOD NIGHT!!! and Next time I write! I'll be posting pics! Because I'll be back in Rochester by Monday night!

First Full Day in Japan

I had my first full day in Japan today! Ohh boy and what a crazy day it was. We didn't have time to do much because there were some major changes in the plans.

But Maki is a trooper and being so strong. She spent the morning on the phone, so I waited for her while lounging around the hotel room, finishing my romance novel and getting over my jetlag;-) (oh the sacrafices that I make for my best friend ;-)

When she finished her calls we headed to "Hawkstown" which is a mall that's pretty much connected to our hotel. We only had a few hours so we walked around, I tried on some Japanese clothes (where I am seriously huge and need a diet compared to these japanese women). We spent the majority of our time at the arcade taking pictures of ourselves with these special machines where you can draw on your picture and add borders and text.

Maki's parents met us there. It was my first time meeting them. I was so nervous! I spent the entire cab ride memorizing my one and only sentance that I can say to them: "Konichiwa, eioudek-te ushimasen" (Hello! I'm so pleased to meet you!). The poor taxi driver must have thought we were crazy because I kept repeating it outloud, forgetting it, and then repeating it the entire ride.

Her parents are the CUTEST thing ever :-) They are so friendly and although they didn't speak any English, and I don't speak any Japanese we communicated easily through "body language" as Maki's mom put it. I gave them a scrapbook of Maki's life in Rochester, and we spent the whole time pointing and signing to talk. It was really neat actaully...and I'm pretty sure they understood me :-) The only mix up we had was when her dad bought me an iced coffee and I had to send it back and get a coke instead because I am allergic to coffee :-/

So anyway, we finally headed to dinner with her parents. Here's a pic (excuse the quality, but I don't have photoshop on this machine):

Welcome to Fukuoka!

Hi!!!

I made it to Japan! WAHOO!! And survived my first night. Wow. It's so amazing here. I thought that Turkey was different when I went there, but Japan is even more a shock to the system. The signs are so different, and the people are so tiny! I look like a huge fatty compared to the people here. I guess all that sushi and rice is keeping them thin.

So, everything about this adventure has not quite worked out correctly, yet worked out pretty smoothly. Yesterday morning Seymen drove me to the airport only to find that my flight was delayed 2 hours. So I hung around Rochester, no big deal. I arrived in Chicago, and my flight to Osaka was delayed 50 mins. No big deal again because they said we would land at 4:05PM instead of 4:00PM.

OK, so another weird thing...I forget all the time that I look asian. I really think most of the time (minus the times I'm looking in the mirror) that I look cacasian...like my sisters maybe ;-)...BUT, I guess I don't. Everyone has been trying to talk to me in Japanese. They are very confused when I get this glazed over look, shrug my shoulders and apologetically ask for English? The flight attendant on the flight kept speaking to me in Japanese, I think because I just smiled and nodded everytime she said anything to me :-)

OK back to my story...so we arrived in Osaka at 5PM. Really late. My next flight was supposed to leave at 5:30. Well let me just tell you about how organized and HELPFUL the airlines are here. Over the loud speaker, my name was announced that they needed to discuss my connection. Outside the plane, a very helpful (and beautiful and skinny as my pinkie) flight attendant apologized profusly for the inconvienence, and told me I had missed my flight. She had already gone and reserved me a new ticket, and once I left customs I could go pick up my new ticket on the later flight to Fukuoka. I explained that I was supposed to meet my friend at the airport, so she kindly offered to call ANA in Fukuoka and leave Maki a message. (Maki had changes and mix-ups all of her own, so our plans as of 11AM yesterday changed that we would meet at the airport and share a cab to the hotel together)

So blah blah, that all worked out. I arrived in Fukuoka with no other problems. (Note, the airplanes are VERY nice inside Domestic Japan. They are all upgraded and modern.) When I arrived in Fukuoka, I was over an hour later than I originally was supposed to be. I looked around a little bit but didn't see Maki waiting anywhere, so I assumed that she had taken off for the hotel without me.

I collected my bags and headed out on my own into JAPAN!!! I found the first taxi guy and pulled out my Sea Hawk brochure (all in Japanese thank god). He looked at it and nodded, and then in Japanese, sign, and 1-2 english works splattered in there, we agreed that taking the highway is best, becuase it's shorter, that I am Korean, but from the USA, I think he may have said that he is Chinese, that there is my hotel and the YAHOO Dome where they play baseball. (Such an experience communicating where I can't even say that I know how to say PLEASE!)

Same thing at the hotel. Everyone is just so friendly and trys so hard to communicate with me. The girl that brought me to my room was so cute. We couldn't really speak much at all as she knew even less Enligh than my cab driver...but she did say: "Me no speak English" which I in return said: "I don't speak Japanese" and we both giggled (because they do that here. They are so small, beautiful and dainty that they don't laugh, it's more like a giggle. I sound like a freaking hyiena compared to the Japanese girls here, with my loud offensive, CLEARLY a laugh, not a giggle.

K, anyway...she showed me my room, and via sign language I asked for an Ethernet cable so I could connect to the internet. When she brought it back, I tried to tip her, even though I didn't know the value of the money I had hehehe...but she refused a tip. Come to find out that you don't need to tip anyone at this hotel! Well, my room is awesome. It's huge and has all the comforts. It has a TOTO toilet like on the travel channel! I haven't tried it out yet, because the pictures on the side describing it are kind of scarey to me ;-). But I took some photos of it for Seymen, because he's probably the only one who would be as excited as I am, to see a real live TOTO Toilet :-)

Well after I used the facilities, I used the hand soap, which smelled exactly like the Japanese shampoo that our exchange students would bring me in high school (and my dad and sister when they went to Japan). Ohh the memories! So I decided to take a shower with their shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo made specificially for my type of hair...oh the luxuries of being in Asia!! My shower was wonderful after almost 24 hours of travelling. Once I had explored everything in the room, I decided to go to bed because I was a little lonely, and pretty tired...but when I laid down, my mind was racing and I couldn't sleep. Well after 2 minutes of laying in bed, I was saved by the bell....

Maki had finally arrived at the hotel! Phewww! The hotel told me that she wasn't checking in until tomorrow, so I thought maybe she had changed her mind and gone straight to her parents house. As it turned out, she was at the airport waiting for me, and we somehow missed each other. She was on the phones and I guess I was in la-la land trying to figure out how I was going to communicate in Japanese, when knowing NONE of the language. We worked it out afterwards that I probably walked right past her and didn't notice. She was worried that she didn't see me, and called her mom. Her mom started freaking out saying: "Maki, you didn't find Beth?? Oh my god, she doesn't speak Japanese! Do you want us to come out there and get you guys? What are we going to do!?" LOL. Awwww how sweet :-) Maki, in turn was praying that I had made it to the hotel...which I had...so all is well that ends well.

So Maki and I hung out until 1AM. We decided to get up at 9:00AM for our free breakfast...buffet stlye of Japanese style. I set my alarm clock and fell asleep in no time. But I woke up at 8:00AM, which is why I'm here, writing a book about my first night in Japan. I was really excited last night because Seymen was just getting to work when I signed online...so I was able to talk to him right away. But now it's 7PM and it looks like he's not working that late tonight...so I can't talk to him on IM. Oh well. :-)

Anyway, I'm going to get dressed etc. We are going to see the Fukuoka Tower and the beach this morning before our wedding appointment at 2:00PM. YEAYYY I LOVE JAPAN!! :-)

Flight Delayed

I can't believe it but I actually slept really soundly last night. Seymen and I went to dinner with Alex, Cathy, and AnG at the Korea House last night. After dinner, we headed to target so I could buy a new laptop bag because min ripped. When we were there we ran into Cathy and Alex again :-) So, we came home, and I don't even remember what exactly it was that I did, but I was on the computer...Ohh yeah, I was working...and then when that was done I called Maki and she talked me through unpacking a bunch of items from my bag...to ensure that I have enough space for all the presents that I'm planning to buy. We worked through a plan for the entire week, which leaves me with two free days to tour by myself...Saturday and Monday.

After my phone call with her, I went ahead and packed my new laptop bag...unpacked it, repacked it...unpacked more books from my big bag...I ended up with 6 romance novels (instead of 8) and 3 pairs of pants/skirt (instead of 6), and only 2 pairs of shoes (instead of 4). I feel much better about the amount of stuff that I'm taking.

I'm was totally wound up though. I usually way under pack for trips and last night for some reason I was freaking out and adding so much unnecessary stuff. I was completely freaked out all day yesterday. I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to sleep last night...but I went to bed and fell asleep immediately and didn't wake up (nor have bad dreams) until 5:45AM.

So, Seymen drove me to the airport and went with me to check in. (Good thing he came in with me!) As it turns out, my flight to Chicago is delayed 2 hours. The crew came in late last night, so I guess they need to sleep some extra hours. Either way, I should be able to make my connection. I have an hour in between flights now...instead of 3. So I'm glad that I get to spend those extra three hours with Seymen. He brought me to McD's for breakfast and then to work. I am currently sitting directly behind him :-) Occasionally, I will bump my chair into his, just so he remembers that I'm still here ;-) hehehe.

So anyway...here I am...just waiting with baited breath for my flights to take off! and start my big journey to Japan.

Packing Again

So I'm leaving for Japan in 1 day! OMG! I think I'm about all packed. For some reason my suitcase is FULLL. When I went to Eurpoe over the summer, my suitcase was much emptier. It must be the gifts and the snacks that I have packed ;-) When my plane from LA landed on Friday evening, Seymen brought me over to my dad's house to rest and sleep until he finished working. I was talking to my dad about my upcoming trip to Japan. He gave me a lot of advice on how to deal with the Jetlag...including sleeping as much as I need to to get used to the time change...and to pack DVDs, books, and snacks because I'll most likely wake up at 2AM and be awake all night long ;-)

So, taking my dad's advice, I bought a bunch of little snacks...I also forgot that my hotel is right on the beach, and there's an indoor pool (that looks really gorgous from the pictures in the brochure!) so if I am completely intimidated by being in Japan alone, knowing no Japanese, I can always lounge by the water and get a TAN! :-)

That's being said, I don't plan on chickening out. I have done a ton of research and printed off tons of maps and tourist attractions to visit on my own. I'm so nervous but more excited than anything :-))

Anyway, I'm just sitting here thinking of anything else I might have forgotten. I just remembered that I have to print out my Japanese labels for Maki's Parent's scrapbook...and I need Seymen's MP3 Player so I can download and listen to my: "Learn Japanese - Learn the Basics CDs" on the airplane...and listen and memorize my speech for Maki's wedding. Tomorrow I'm going to my dad's to exchange some of my romance novels for some of Georgia's novels.

L.A. for the Week

Here's pictures from LA

We had a great trip. It was extremely productive from the professional side...and just a blast from the personal side. I don't think that we stopped laughing the ENTIRE trip...and let's just say, there was probably a total of 10 hours of sleep involved in the 4 days that we were gone ;-)

Source of Depression

OK, so I apologize for my previous entry. I was really sad and depressed, and probably not all due to the events of the weekend and my day at work on Tuesday. I think that I've figured out why I'm sad. I had to cancel taking course 2 for Cake decorating this month because of a business trip to LA next week, and my trip to Japan the week after that. On wednesday night I was telling Seymen how weird it felt not to be baking a cake.

I called my mom to discuss my depression over not making a cake this week for class. She told me about a dinner party our friend Corkey is having on the 15th, which she wanted to request that I make a cake for. She is also interested in me working with her and her new company to make cakes for them! So I took on the task of making the cake this weekend and freezing it all decorated in my cake caddie so my mom can take the cake to the party on the 15th (I will be returning from LA on that day, so there won't be enough time to bake it and decorate it on Friday.)

Well tonight I went to my Dad's house for dinner, where my step-brother's girlfriend was over. We had a great time drinking wiine, and just talking. Well as it turns out, next tuesday is her neice's first birthday! So, I offered to make a cake for the birthday!! I'm so excited. I am going to make a Princess Castle Cake! It's a two tiered cake with little spires. I'm going to improvse based on my teacher's information, and make a cute little blue moat with water around it and a drawbridge! How sweet is that!?!?! And it's going to have little flags flying from the 5 spires!

Anyway, stay tuned for the cakes :-) I'm so excited and so happy again. Work and people can't even ruin my excitiment. And the best part is that Mary is going to buy my supplies, which I get to keep...so any new baking tins ;-) are MINE!!! Yeayyyyyy!!! I love cake decorating!!

So, I just have give a special shout out to my family. Because no one supports me like they do (other than Maki and Seymen, who are pretty much included in my family.) I was telling my mom and sister about course 3 which I'm signed up for in October. Our last cake of that class is a two tiered wedding cake made with fondant. My sister came up with the great idea of having a Black Tie affair to eat the wedding cake! We're all (as a family and some friends of the family) going to dress up really nice and go out to dinner, and then come home and drink Champagine and eat my wedding cake :-) That's true family support ya know? They totally just roll with all my crazy ideas...

And even my dad is excited for my cakes. Georgia keeps looking at them and advocating me to everyone she can see. She even tried to negotiate a price from Mary for my cake! ;-) And my dad wants me to bring the cake over because he wants to see it. This is huge. What a support system I have :-) Thank you to my entire family for your support, and only a few comments about how this is turning into another verison of scrapbooking....which for the record, even though I have so many supplies, I still do it, and make a lovely scrapbook yearly for Seymen's family :-)

I'm dreaming of a....cheeseburger?

I'm dreaming of a...cheeseburger? So today is really the day from H-E-L-L. I woke up this morning late...I have somehow started turning off my alarm clock in my sleep. Badddd Beth. I got all dressed and was about to leave when Seymen remembered that he was supposed to bring his car to the shop. So, I drove over to Dorschel and picked him up. For some reason my mind wasn't working, and I ended up taking the longest way possible to get there.

So Seymen dropped me at work and took my car for the day. Immediately I was hit with everything that needed to be done for a posting today. Shoot. I don't have a car, so I need to walk over to the other building. I packed my bag, and had a nice soothing walk over to the other building. I set myself up at an empty desk and have since then spent the day soothing everyone...taking blame for the crazyiness (becuase you know that I do this on purpose, just to ruin the lives of all my team members...NOT!)

That being said, I didn't have time or a car to go get lunch so I had to vending machine it up. But I didn't have any singles so I could only afford a $0.75 can of coke and a $0.50 bag of cheese-its...where they only put like 10 crackers in the bag. Boooo...Now I'm starvin' marvin'. I hit up alex for a dollar to get another soda to hide the hunger pains in my stomache.

OK, so as you can tell I'm feeling really miserable today. It was a "not the best" weekend, and now I'm stuck working late waiting for stuff to finish.

Ok...so here's the weekend drama. Friday was a tough day. Maki was leaving for NJ right after work, so I was sad. After work Friday, I went over to my mom's for dinner at the Yacht club with the family. Seymen showed up late, right as we were leaving to go home. So we ordered him a plate to go and headed home. Shortly thereafter he remembered that he was going to a bachelor party the next night, and that due to the bachelor party weekend, we had a guest (who neither of us knew) staying until monday. Thank goodness we had the air mattress all set up for Maki! Anyway, after dinner we had a great time hanging out. We went to Schooners for some after dinner drinks and hanging out with the fam...where Chrissy and I were hit on by a 53 year old man, who thought we reminded him of his daughters (yes, it was very strange).

After our festivities, we had to go to Brighton to pick up our guest. We were then bitched at because we were so late (Sorrrry, but you have a car...drive somewhere in it!). Saturday during the day Seymen left for the bachelor party (and I was not invited to the bachelorette party, just to prove a rediculous point, but whatever. I'm still bitter about that. I would have like to have been invited just so I could say HELLL Freaking NOOO!) so I went to Jake's house for a clambake...which I enjoyed ALOT. I then headed out to a party with my old boss (which Seymen avoided, much his dismay I'm sure ;-) due to the bachelor party. I came home not too late, and enjoyed the evening to myself...Finishing my book, and then watching my latest chick-flick netflix movie. Around 2AM, after having dozed off in bed...Seymen arrived with a car full of buddies that he needed to get home safely...

So I got up and drove them to our friend's apartment. We were just hanging out chilling (at 2AM yes :-) when the girls showed up...where again I received attitude for my being there. Nevermind the fact that I drove all the guys home so they didn't DIE!! But nevermind that fact. Apparently girls aren't allowed to show up for bachelor parties at all, even if you are saving someone's life.

OK, so enough of that. I'm getting mad again. So Sunday was a really nice day. My little buddy and I had a special day together. We went and played mini-golf and then headed to Chucky Cheese with the one nice girl of the college friends group. We spent the afternoon having fun playing and eating pizza. After I dropped off my little buddy, we headed back to Chris's and drank Fuzzy Navels into the night.

Monday AM, I was left at home alone while everyone (except me) was invited to guys only and girls only brunch. Apparently, due to some really stupid person's insecurities and issues, they can be extremely rude and disrespectful to me, for doing nothing wrong, other than existing and having shared many FUN experiences before SHE was in the picture.

I was relieved to say the least when everyone went back to their homes after the bachelor party weekend. Seymen and I ended up shaking off the annoyances of the weekend (and can I add REALLLY REALLY insanely large annoyances) by doing a little Labor Day Sale shopping, ande having a clambake at his friend's house. We even had Bayley and Peake for the party which was really fun :-)

So anyway, that's my story. I'm still really really bitter about the weekend, and pretty hurt. Not that I blame anyone but one really mean, really insecure, really ANNOYING person, that has no human decency. Had I been in her position, I would have sucked it up for the sake of my significant other and been a nice person. But then again, I'm not surprised because she's a money-sucking jerk.

My Final Cake from Course 1

Here's my final cake from course 1! I did the roses! Wahooo!! I brought the cake to work today and gained some major popularity. It was gone by 1:30! :-) I have more pics of course at home, which I haven't had time to upload yet.

image.bmp

Last night was Maki's last night in Rochester. After cake class we went to dinner and Shiki where we cried a little bit...and then we went home and Maki and I worked on her "Welcome to Maki and Richard's Wedding Reception" welcome sign. It's very pretty. It has a shrine in the background, and scrolls with pictures of her and Richard. At 1AM we went to sleep, and I woke up this morning and sat on Maki's bed and talked to her for about 5 mins. before I left for work.
