Rochester Fast Ferry to Istanbul, TURKEY??
ROCHESTER, N.Y. An overseas company could give Rochester a run for its troubled fast ferry.
A federal judge has given representatives from the Istanbul Fast Ferries Company permission to tour the "Spirit of Ontario" at its Port of Rochester berth. The company formed by the Turkish city is interested in buying the high-speed ferry and moving it to Istanbul.
Representatives from the company plan to tour the ferry on Thursday.
The high-speed ferry has been sitting idle in the Genesee River since early September, when its owner halted service to Toronto when the company ran out of money.
The city of Rochester has plans to buy the ferry during a foreclosure auction being held at the end of this month. The city wants to return the ferry to service on Lake Ontario.
The "Spirit of Ontario" ran between Rochester and Toronto for less than three months last summer before the operator shut it down because of financial problems.
