It's good to be Asian!
I had a really good day today! Things at work are going really well. I'm really getting involved with projects and helping people out etc. I guess I can gague if I am getting into the swing of work, because I don't have moments where there's absolutly nothing to do, and nothing I can help with. This is really good. I'm not bored at work at all.
Anyway...I had to leave work in a bit of a hurry tonight because I had an appointment with my new car/apartment insurance guy. I was running late though, so I decided to try a new route home, which was rumored to be faster than the Highway - Mopac Highway...Anyway, I took the 360 loop (A.K.A. Capital of Texas Highway) which is the most beautiful route ever. It goes right through the lower hill country. There were cliffs on both sides, and beautiful green rolling hills. Huge mansions built into the hills and cliffs on both sides of the highway. At one point I looked down and I could see the river...THen I stopped looking at the scenary because I almost crashed into the person in front of me (which might have been not so good when trying to get new car insurance)...hehehe.
Anyway, I arrived at Nationwide insurance and met my new agent: "Allan". Allan is from Hong Kong. He used to work in the banking industry, travelling all over Asia and to NY as well. He left Hong Kong due to the Chinese Communist Government and now lives in Austin. Anyway, he was the nicest sweetest guy. He is working (on the side) with the Asian Chamber of Commerace, and other Asian volunteer groups in Austin. He offered for me to call him any time if I have any questions about Austin, or where to eat, anything. He also gave me two stamps so I could mail the phone bill from Hylan Place (because the bills from the Roch. apt. are still being sent to me...and this one is due next monday or tuesday so I had to send it in)...Anyway...he gave me two stamps free of charge. Then he offered to meet me for lunch sometime to show me a good Chinese resturant. Unfortunatly, my lunch hour is not long enough because my work is South and his office is up North where my apartment it. Anyway, he offered to bring me lunch sometime to work if I wanted it. And then he explained that he just wanted to do this because he thought I was so brave moving here alone, and he knows how hard it is to find your way in a new place. Anyway, I just thought he was the sweetest guy...(I don't know if this all came about because I started our conversation off with my roach story...but whatever...That and being Asian helped I think).
Oh yeah, and in addition he's totally helped me out with my insurance and given me "advice" so that I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for my car insurance...which makes me like him even more. Anyway, it was pretty neat to see how friendly people are here. (I don't know if I told you the other Korean Washer and Dryer Salesman story...but he was going to give me a lifetime warrenty on the washer and dryer because I was Korean, as was he.)
Let's see...On top of that! Chrissy, Jake, and Seymen are coming TOMORROW! I can't believe it's already here! I'm so excited!!! I picked up the package from the apartment office today during lunch, that contained Chrissy and Jake's air mattress bed! And all the girls at work are helping me come up with cool ideas where to take my guests! Mary, the manager of the trainers, made a list for me during our meeting of all the places I NEED to take them. It was so nice.
The one thing she told me to do with them was take them on the River Float in New Brawnsfuld (I have no idea how to spell or say that). This place sounds soooo cool! You rent large innertubes and a "cooler" tube, tie them all together, and just ride down this spring fed river, with little mini rapids (tiny little falls that you can just ride down), while drinking some beers from your cooler!!!! How cool does that sound!??!?! Anyway, my new friend Erin is going to be in that town (I'll call it New B for now) this weekend visiting her parents, and she said to call her if we're going to come down, and she'll give us directions and meet us there!!! I'm so excited! I just hope it doesn't rain.
Let's see...I also talked to my new Turkish teacher today. He called me at work this afternoon, and was trying to quiz me over the phone on my Turkish to see what level I was. I was so nervouse. I couldn't remember anything. And I was sitting my cube, in the middle of cube land, trying to speak Turkish. Fortunately, I checked with Steph, my next door cube mate, and she didn't hear me, so I felt better :) Anyway, I have my first class this Saturday. I think it'll work out OK, because then Seymen will be able to meet my new teacher :p
OK...Two more things to add to my social life here in Texas...I'm going to convince my friend Erin at work that she needs to take a sewing class at Joanne's Etc. with me, for fun, because she seemed interested in it! And two of the other girls --Elizabeth and Steph, enjoy scrapbooking, so we're going to get together sometime, drink some wine (or Elizabeth's famous Apple-Tinis), and scarpbook together! :)
So..I have lots of plans...and I think I'm almost getting ready to start getting over the whole roach incident. I called the apt. office and they are fumigating next tuesday. Tomorrow I will be buying a bottle of Raid, and a fly swatter...and maybe a baseball bat. Mary suggested that to me, after describing this one roach, a Tree Roach, that is the size of a hand for real...not exaggerating...she had one at her house and it was so big, that she was hitting it with a baseball bat and it still didn't die. It was stunned. She said that she had to wack it like 10 times to make it die...So...again, my roach was not the biggest they have here in Texas.
Anyway, I'm off to bed. I always have so much I want to do at night and just not enough time to do it before bedtime! GOODNIGHT!! Have a GREAT WEEKEND! I probably won't write again until Monday night when they leave...Ohh well maybe tomorrow while I'm waiting for them to arrive at 11pm :-(

I want to be Korean!! You and your Asian hook-ups...I'm so jealous. Being an average white girl sucks! ;)
Glad you aren't letting the bugs scare you off...there is a lot more to TX than the wildlife. It's just one of the many little adjustments you'll have to make...(and you're always more than welcome to borrow Nate for a bug killing mission!)
Love you!
